What is the ISDN switch off?
Openreach plans to switch off the PSTN public switched telephone and traditional ISDN networks for good. Starting with a cease in supply from 2020.
This is because the ISDN line and PSTN line technology is dated and has high maintenance costs. Migrating to a full-fibre network will allow Openreach to concentrate on improving network features rather than maintaining legacy technologies.
How to prepare for the switch off?
Preparing for the switch-off is incredibly easy. A new recommendation for your telephony system would be changing to Voice by Bluecube.
Our system works using a voice over internet protocol (VoIP system). Introducing a phone system through an internet connection provides many benefits.
As well as bringing cost savings to businesses with a cost-effective communications network, VoIP telephone systems can introduce multiple enhancements.
Already have an internal copper wire network? Then Bluecube is able to look at installing SIP trunks to your network. SIP trunking directly connects your internal network to the Public Telephone Network using an internet connection.

When will the PSTN and ISDN networks be switched off?
Currently, the BT ISDN switch-off date is being highlighted as 2025. However, Openreach & BT have indicated supplies for new PSTN and ISDN phone lines will cease from 2020. The intention is that any new telephone networks from 2020 will be IP based.
Future-proofing your telephony system should be a priority for any business.
